In the 1st round of pool play, the Blazers did not wrestle their best against Conway, losing 47-30. After a short break between rounds allowed us to talk about some simple technique issues, the team wrestled much better against Marion. Unfortunately, 1 or 2 key matches went the wrong way, causing the team to lose their 2nd match of the day 40-28. In the final match of pool play, the wrestlers ended up on the right side of the results with a very exciting 42-40 finish.
Trailing 34-18 with 4 matches to go, Quentin Frost and Jonathan Cardona both received a forfeit. After that, 152 Aaron Wright went out and got a huge pin in only his 6th day of wrestling to give the team the lead. After forfeiting the next weight class, and leaving the team trailing 40-36 Roman Robinson was the last to take the mat. Knowing he needed to most likely pin his opponent, he asserted his dominance early in the 2nd period and got the pin…securing a 42-40 victory!
The next (and final) match of the day was against Aynor High School. By this point in the day, the team had sustained some mild injuries that prevented us from being able to wrestle at full strength. While the team wrestled with great effort and improved throughout the course of the tournament, Aynor proved to be too deep and won critical toss-up matches to emerge with a victory over the Blazers 53-30.
Special shout out to Justin Louderbough, Quentin Frost and Aaron Wright for getting their first pins of their career, Jabari Hampton for going 3-0 while wrestling up at the 220 pound weight class, Michael McQueen and Jonathan Cardona on their 3-1 records.
The team went 1-3 on the day and is 2-4 through the first week of the competitive season.
