The Blazers started the 1st Round of the AAAA playoffs with an impressive pin from Jacob Shusterman over the Airport Eagles in the 220 pound weight class. In the following match, Mike McQueen lost an exciting, back-and-forth match with his opponent by a pin, tying the score at 6-6. The strength of Airport’s lineup, 106 to 138 pounds, put the match out of reach for Ridge View, racking up 29 points with 4 pins and a technical fall in some hard fought, scrappy matches. Mathematically the match was decided when the Blazers were forced to forfeit at the 145 weight class.
Another pin and technical fall in matches that were thought to be toss-ups in the 152 and 160 pound weight classes emphatically ended any hopes of a first playoff win since 2007. Jalen Jones put on an impressive show for the team (and his mother) with a flurry of takedowns and back points before pinning his opponent in the 3rd period. Airport forfeited the final two matches to 182 pounder Jabari Hampton (15-0, Region 3-AAAA champion) and 195 Terry Carson for a final score of 58-24.
In 2017, the team missed the playoffs by one weight class. In 2018, the team rolled into the playoffs comfortably. We are already looking forward to adding to our playoff history in 2019 as we narrow our focus to the AAAA Individual Upper State Tournament at Eastside High School on February 16th!
