The Ridge View Boys Varsity team had their first home conference game against South Pointe. The players played a great game that was organized, team-oriented and they played their hearts out to the very last minute. The players showed their growth from all of the trials in tribulations showed in their previous matches.
South Pointe was able to strike first due to an unfortunate mistake made by our defense. The players did not focus on the negative. It seems the goal only increased their desire to win. In the second half, Ridge View was able to capitalize on a great counter attack scored by Vinicius M. (Senior). The defense started the counter-attack by getting the ball wide to Mechia L. (Senior) who made a successful penetrating pass to Darius W. (Sophomore). Darius took a shot on goal but it was blocked away by the goalkeeper. Fortunately, our team was transitioning as a group and Vini was there to pounce. He scored on a wide-open goal due to the goalkeeper’s inability to recover in time.
The game was tied 1 to 1 at full-time so we went into overtime. No one was able to score in either of the 5-minute overtime periods. So, we went to penalty kicks! As you can imagine the tension is high and everyone is riding high on emotion. Ridge View was able to score on all four (4) of their penalty kicks taken by Darius W., Luis D. (Junior), Jahari E. (Senior) and Joel A. (Junior). Our Freshman goalkeeper, Justin W., saved two (2) of the South Pointe penalty kicks. For that reason alone, Justin W. is listed as our Man of the Match (MotM).
South Pointe was number one in our conference last year. This is a big statement regarding the progress we are making within our program. #NextLevel Thank you to all the parents and supports that stuck around for the ending of our dramatic game.
