Blazers News · Sierra Oliphant Hired as Cross Country Assistant

Sierra Oliphant is joining the Ridge View High School Cross Country staff as an assisntant coach.  She is a Ridge View High School alum (Sierra Henderson while at Ridge View). Her main events were the 4×400, 4×800, the 800-meter dash, and the 5K in cross-country. Originally from Philadelphia, PA, she has lived in and grown to love Columbia, SC for over 14 years. She has been married to Steven Oliphant Jr. for 10 years and they have two children, Ashtyn (8) and Zoe (4). Both former and current athletes know her as “Coach O.”

During her time running at Ridge View (2006-2009), Coach O had the honor of not only placing 7th overall in the state for cross-country with a 5K time of 18:51 in 2007, but went on the following track season to break the 800-meter South Carolina state record in 2008 (2:13:30). Many of her fondest memories were with her relay group who coined themselves the “The Fantastic Four.”

She, Tamara Smith, Eureka Jones, and Maya Adams all ran the 4×400 and 4×800 together, with the 4×800 seeing the most improvement in the State Championship over the course of three years. Coach O and the relay team saw it’s biggest Track/XC improvements under the coaching & guidance of Melanie Armstrong (Bauman) and April Bortins (Yachanin).

Her passion for running carried her to the next level as she signed with the University of South Carolina and earned her B.A. in Psychology. She fully embraced the challenge, despite having to red shirt her first XC season due to an injury. During her college career, she continued to set more PRs.

In the 2016-2017 school year, Coach O assistant coached cross-country under the strong guidance of former Head Coach, Julie Kenison. She then went on to coach the boys and girls distance track teams, finishing the season with multiple PRs and a state appearance by the boys 4×800 relay. Due to a career change, she has functioned as a volunteer summer conditioning XC coach for the past 3 years. She takes the approach that coaching is about tough love, laughter and life lessons, as she knows developing an athlete is mental and physical. She’s ready to come back on full-time as they continue to #RebuildandRELOAD!777

“I am Happy to have Coach O join me with this new wave of talent. She was always my number one choice when I got the HC job. Not only is she someone of incredible accomplishments, she has been a wonderful mentor to me since I became a coach in 2018, and I am happy to have her on board to help not only my girls, but my boys reach that next level .”-Coach Stackhouse
