A pitcher’s duel erupted Thursday night at Blazer Field, ending in Ridge View’s 1-0 victory over Irmo. Ridge View’s starting pitcher Baylor Barry (So) pitched five shutout innings, allowing only two hits to record the win.
“I felt good out there. This is my first year on varsity and I didn’t want to let the team down,” responded Barry when asked about his performance.
In a strong first inning, Barry retired the side in order, striking out the third hitter. He returned in the second for another 1-2-3 inning. Barry recorded another strikeout in the third, keeping the Yellow Jackets scoreless and hitless. With two outs in the fourth, Irmo hit a ground single to left center, breaking Barry’s no-hitter. Without being deterred, Barry maintained his presence on the mound, allowing only one more hit before exiting the game in the top of the sixth.
Irmo’s starting pitcher, Lucas White was also quite effective, striking out eight to hinder the Blazer’s offense.
With tough pitching coming from both teams, Ridge View scored the one and only run off a first and third situation in the bottom of the third. After singling to right center, Dru Chambers (Sr) broke for second, allowing Christian Moody (8th) to steal home.
Preserving the lead, middle relief pitcher Marion Brown (Sr) entered in the sixth and retired the first three hitters he faced. Logan Sherry (Sr) closed out the seventh for the save.
On Friday, April 10th, the Blazers take on Westwood High School at Ridge View. This game will host the annual Senior Night to honor graduating seniors. The recognition ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm with the game beginning at 6:30 pm.
